2011 – Wells Gray, BC Backcountry Ski

We like to do a cabin based, backcountry ski trip once a year.  In mid February 2011 ten of us went to Discovery Cabin, one of three cabins owned and operated by Wells Gray Adventures.  They are all located in Wells Gray Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada.

The trip started with a short helicopter ride in.  Then it was a week of hiking up and skiing down through calf or knee deep powder snow.  We ended the week by skiing back to the cars.  We had excellent powder skiing and great company the whole week.  Many thanks to:

  • Dan and Marilyn for organizing the whole trip.  All we had to do was write a cheque and show up.
  • Ferdinand for doing the pre-trip food preparation and cooking all the meals there.  Everyone on the trip agreed that we ate better on this trip than any other we had been on.
  • Ian Eakins, lead guide and Wells Gray Adventures owner, and Jean-Francois, assistant guide.  They kept us safe from avalanches, showed us where all the good runs are, broke tail on the hikes up, and kept us entertained with stories about the area and their guiding experiences.

Following is a video of some of the runs and a slideshow of the whole trip.  You can see the video in full screen view and higher resolution by pressing the buttons on the lower right.

Now the slideshow. Press the white button on the top right to get a full screen view. Select the first photo and then click the arrows on either side of each picture to scroll through the set.
