Even though we are calling this trip a “Glacier Bay Area Ski Traverse” we never saw Glacier Bay, Alaska or were even very close to it. We were however in the general area and that was close enough since we couldn’t think of a better name for this trip.
The trip started with our group flying to Yakutat, small fishing village on the Alaska Panhandle. After waiting in the rain for a couple of days we chartered a small plane on skis to fly us to the top of the north arm of the Grand Pacific Glacier near Mt. Hay. From there we made our way down to Alsek Lake and then Dry Bay doing side trips along the way.
On the trip with us were Anne, Colin, Irene, Janet, and John. This was the last big trip we did with Janet Noakes, and John Pearson. Janet and John died in 1996 on Mt. Cerberus in British Columbia. A small avalanche swept them and another person over a large cliff. That was a very sad time for us because we looked forward to doing many more trips with them. We created a separate webpage with photos of John and Janet from various trips.
Now the photos which are scanned transparencies. If you expand the photo viewer to full page the “Adventures” menu will stop working. This is because of technical issues with the website software. Pick any other menu item and go to that web page. The “Adventures” menu will then work properly.
