1987 – Powdercap Ski Traverse

Normally a trip like this would not be included on our website. This is because we are missing all the photos from the last 1½ days of this 4 day trip. Perhaps there is a misplaced box of slides lurking in a corner in our house or perhaps I, Manrico, had camera problems that prevented me from taking more photos. The trip was in 1987 but the slides were scanned and this webpage created in 2023. Liz and I were both on the trip but our memories of it are fading including why there are no photos of the last part of the trip!

Regardless, this trip is included on our website for several reasons. This trip was:

  • The first ski traverse longer than 3 days for either of us.
  • The first exploratory-type ski traverse for either of us. Our previous ski traverses were on well documented and known routes. Not this one. There was very little information about this route. This trip was pre-GPS and pre-Internet.
  • The trip where we gained confidence to do similar and bigger trips such as the much more ambitious Pitt Lake to Blackcomb Ski Traverse in 1988.
  • Our last trip before our wedding a few weeks later.

This was an Alpine Club of Canada – Vancouver Section trip that I led as a volunteer. We can’t remember who was on the trip except for Irene. She was also on our 1988 trip along with many others over the years. The other four participants were club members who signed up for the trip.
