Our 1990 trip was very important for us. It was our first arctic trip. We planned to visit Baffin Island’s Auyuittuq National Park, known for its spectacular granite peaks.
Our trip started at Pangnirtung, a vibrant community of about 1,500 people. A chartered boat took us to the head of the neighbouring Kingnait Fiord which is outside the park. From there we hiked through seldom visited country to Summit Lake in the park then down a trail to Pangnirtung Fiord. A boat took us back to Pangnirtung.
On the trip were good friends Irene, Janet Noakes, and John Pearson. Janet and John died in 1996 on Mt. Cerberus in British Columbia. A small avalanche swept them and another person we knew over a large cliff. That was a very sad time for us because we looked forward to doing many more trips with them. We created a separate webpage with photos of John and Janet from various trips.
Following is a Google Earth tour of our route. Ignore the poor Google Earth imagery in some places. This video will be replaced when the imagery improves.
Now the photos which are scanned transparencies. If you expand the photo viewer to full page the “Adventures” menu will stop working. This is because of technical issues with the website software. Refresh the web page. The “Adventures” menu will then work properly.
