In 2003 we did something completely different for us. We participated in a 13 day canoe trip where all of us were in one 11 meter (37 foot) canoe and we paddled the ocean coastline. Chris Cooper, owner of Spirit Dancer Canoe Journeys and a member of the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC), organized the trip for the ACC.
There were 11 of us in the one canoe including Chris and his assistant Janey. The group included our good friends Irene and Doug with whom we’ve done many trips together. We also knew most of the other trip participants.
The trip started Port Hardy near on northern Vancouver Island. Towing the Spirit Dancer (our canoe) we traveled by water taxi northwest to Burnett Bay on the mainland. We paddled south along the coast to the Broughton Archipelago (group of islands). Island hopping took us back to Vancouver Island where we ended the trip at Port McNeil.
We are so lucky to be living in British Columbia. Where else in the world can you do trips like this in your back yard?
