The Wapta Traverse is the best known ski traverse in the Canadian Rockies. It crosses the Wapta and Waputik Icefields which straddle the continental divide on the border between Alberta and British Columbia. Only experienced or guided groups should undertake this trip since the traverse crosses extensive glaciers, complex terrain, and avalanche slopes.
The traverse is normally done in five travel days with overnight stays at four Alpine Club of Canada backcountry huts: Peyto Hut, Bow Hut, Balfour Hut, and Scott Duncan Hut. We did the trip in four days and bypassed the Bow Hut.
The two of us did the trip with Helen, Irene, Liz B (a different Liz) and two of her friends, Hugh and Paul. It was a fun trip although we had bad weather for almost the entire route.
