I (Manrico) made two trips to the Manatee area about 150 kilometers north of our home Vancouver, British Columbia. Both were ski camps where we flew in by helicopter and spent several days doing trips from camp. In 1984 we ended the trip by doing a two-day ski traverse to the Meager Creek area where we accessed logging roads and walked back to our cars. In 1986 we flew both in and out of camp which was in a different location from our 1984 trip.
The 1984 trip was with friends. The 1986 trip was a group organized by the Alpine Club of Canada, Vancouver Section. The 1986 trip included Liz who I first met in 1985.
The traverse we did in 1984 is no longer feasible to do. In 2010 a huge landslide destroyed several kilometers of logging road and a major bridge crossing the Lillooet River. The road and bridge are required to complete the traverse. The river is much to big to cross without a bridge. The road and bridge will likely never get rebuilt even though they provided access to the well known Meager Hot Springs. The entire area will remain undeveloped because it is the most geologically unstable area in all of Canada and perhaps North America. Numerous large landslides have occurred in recent years. Mount Meager is a dormant volcano which last erupted about 2,500 years ago and may erupt again at any time.
Now the photos which are Kodachrome transparencies scanned in 2021. Unfortunately many of the transparencies have degraded with time even though they were stored properly.
If you expand the photo viewer to full page the “Adventures” menu will stop working. This is because of technical issues with the website software. Pick any other menu item and go to that web page. The “Adventures” menu will then work properly.
